dictionary:baud

The speed of a modem, or other serial device, attached to and communicating with a computer. Specifically, the number of times per second a communications channel changes the carrier signal it sends on the phone line. A 14400-baud modem changes the signal 14400 times a second. A variable unit of data transmission speed (as one baud per second). Often confused with bits per second (BPS). They are technically different measurements.
